Approximately 170 cats were discovered in 3 homes in Crystal Springs ( United States ), belonging to the same individual. The animal protection association Humane Society and the police mobilized to get the felines out of there.

Rescuers were able to enter the homes with a search warrant. The scene there was chilling. Countless numbers of felines faced them in the middle of the waste. The 3 apartments were “ dirty, infested with flies and fleas ,” said a press release shared by WLBT .

In one of the residences, the smell of ammonia caused by urine was so strong that it was difficult to breathe. It burned the eyes of the speakers. Litter boxes were installed, but were “ overflowing with feces ”.

Dramatic conditions

The felines had no water available. Some of them lived in “ stacked, cramped, rusty metal cages .” Because of this immense neglect, many fell ill. They suffered in particular from skin infections, respiratory infections and eye problems. Others even lost their lives and were placed in a freezer. A shocking sight for rescuers.

The latter began to organize themselves to get the animals out of this hell. They were transferred to a partner shelter of the Humane Society, specially designed to accommodate them. 2 survivors were taken to the veterinarian because they needed to be hospitalized.

Devoted benefactors

This rescue moved the shelter staff. Laura Koivula , director of animal crimes at the Humane Society , said: “ It breaks my heart to imagine these cats living day after day in small, dirty cages, without even being able to receive the basic care they need. need .” She hopes they can lead a more peaceful existence with loving families.

Crystal Springs Mayor Sally Garland praised the work of the association, which demonstrated great professionalism in handling the situation.
